About . . .

Although I have been photographing for about 30 years, I did not start showing my fine-art work until 1998. My work appears in several publications as well as various Long Island fine-art shows and galleries where I have won several awards.

I studied visual communications and aesthetics at Queens College, CUNY; Teachers College of Columbia University; and at the International Center of Photography, NYC. I have also taken workshops with Galen Rowell, George Lepp, and Moose Peterson, noted outdoor photographers.

While teaching communications during the last two decades, I worked as a sailing instructor, published articles on sailing, and pursued interests in fine-art photography. Since 2001, I have focused on photography full-time while teaching part-time.

I was a writer-photographer for the Maryland Department of Transportation, a multi-media program designer at Queens College of CUNY, and a writer-photographer for Pan American Airways. For three summers I taught sailing as an island skipper for Sail Caribbean Voyages.

My articles on sailing and navigation have appeared in SAIL, Boating, and Small Boat Journal. I have reviewed books for The New York Times, McGraw-Hill and Harcourt Brace. I was the editor of Tiller and the Pen: A Collection of Sailors' Stories (Eighth Moon Press, 1994).

The gallery on this site provides a glimpse of my work.

I hope the writing section will provide a resource and perspective for those who appreciate fine-art photography and have an interest in nautical writing.

My photographic intent:

"I try to photograph strong compositions that emphasize light, shadow, water, and often reflection as a visual form. With the use of unexpected point of view, I am happy if a print evokes a figurative response in a viewer."
