Pilot Gig and SchoonerIn Vineyard Haven, Martha's Vineyard, from the beach at Black Dog Tavern. Both the pilot gig and schooner (Shenandoah) are in the Black Dog fleet. The gig design dates back 200 years. Originally they were built of narrow leaf Cornish elm. They are known for their seaworthiness and speed. They are usually over 30-feet long and are powered by six single oars.
The Shenandoah is a 108-foot square topsail schooner with no auxiliary power. She was launched in 1964 specifically for the passenger trade. |
