A soft, suggestive mood is established in "By the Wayside," a photograph by John Ellsworth. The irregular contours of an old house are made even more eccentric by reflection in the wavy glass of a window across the road.
The inevitable nostalgia is countered by the interesting formal interplay between the reflection and the window that frames it, giving the picture greater depth than the subject matter might suggest.
