Strength, light, and balance—about a Jeff Urquhart photo

Urquhart-bridge

What are we looking at?

It may take a moment to figure that its the underside of a bridge, in this case, the Robert Moses Bridge on the south shore of Long Island, near Captree Island. It was shot by a photographer friend, Jeff Urquhart.

What strikes me first about this image is the abstract symmetry. I’m intrigued by the repetition of overhead arches leading to the foggy “light” down the center. Three colors—granite,  blue-green, and red-orange, interplay well with the overall form and design.

This photo is well composed and exposed. It has a medieval and cathedral-like appeal that shows strength, light, and balance, all of which happen to be desirable human attributes.

Thanks for letting me share this captivating image, Jeff.

  1. The ethereal quality of the lighting is truly beautiful! Makes me wonder what lurks beyond that blue light…..

Great shot Jeff, and well written post John!

  2. This is gorgeous and what it really is matters not a bit! Actually, learning what it is spoils the mystery and the haunting spirituality of the image…but leave it to you to disregard signposts and look under! Thank you for you visual inquisitiveness and photographic skills to take a photograph so visually Gregorian Chant-like. The blue, to me, is a window into the heavens and the structure can be a cathedral. The isolated silence can be solitary monastic confinement…..oh, that it’s the underside of the Causeway Bridge can halt my personal trip into your world and as an artist I want to present the viewer with infinite possibilities and not play guessing games as to what I am photographing. Next time you post, I suggest you invite viewers to write you what they think the subject is. Your are skilled with your camera, love the water and have a great eye for composition. Thanks for sharing and thanks John for sharing your blog space too!!!!!

  3. Great shot, Jeff! It’s beautiful in the colors shown. I’m sure it would look equally good in black and white. Thanks for sharing it with us!
